The Technical Committee of the Association of CEM & SAAM Workers and CEM co-organized “Management and Usage of Urban Underground Space” Seminar

The available ground space in Macau is on the decline due to economic booms in recent years. Macau is widely expected to come up with new countermeasures while having improvement on the use and continuing the sustainable development of urban space. Concerning this, the Technical The seminar was held at the conference hall of Macao Science Center at 14:30 on 9 October, 2013 aiming to introduce and discuss with the industry insiders on the solutions of sustainable application, space development and technical aspects, as well as the feasibility and perfectibility of the solutions. The seminar is supported by IEEE Macau, SOE (Macau Region) and Macau Science Center. Guests who attended the seminar include: Lau Chan Chong, Representative of Secretary for Transport and Public Works; Felix Fan, Executive Director of Macao Water Supply Company; Choi Ah Chung, President of IEEE Macau; Vincent Lam, Vice president of SOE Macau Region; Jorge Vieira, Executive Director of CEM; Iun Iok Meng, Advisor to CEM Executive Committee; Charles Leong President of the Board of Directors of the Association of CEM & SAAM Workers and Thomas Cheang, Director of the Technical Committee of the Association of CEM & SAAM Workers.
The Technical Committee of the Association of CEM & SAAM Workers invited five senior experts from Beijing and Macau to deliver keynote speeches at the seminar. Dr. John Zacharias from Peking University; Mok Soi Tou, Chief of the Coordination Department of DSAT; Lawrence Sun, Senior Engineer of CEM, Xia Quan from the State Power Economic Research Institute in Beijing; and Raine Lee, representative from Tata Consultancy Services Limited, gave lectures on “Sustainable Development and Urban Underground Space”, “Feasibility Study for Underground Substation in Macau”, “Problems of the Use of Roads Caused by the Development of Underground Space and Solutions”, “Position Measurement of Underground Cable and Pipelines and Preparations prior to construction” and “How can GIS Help to Improve Underground Facilities Management”, respectively.
Thomas Cheang, Director of the Technical Committee of the Association of CEM & SAAM Workers, expressed gratitude for the support offered by the co-organizers and speakers in his welcoming speech. Thanks to their support and professional insights, allow the Technical Committee of the Association of CEM & SAAM Workers to hold the seminar successfully. He said that the members of the Technical Committee are all professionals and managers from CEM and Macao Water Supply Company Limited. As the city’s water and electricity supplies depend mainly on the utilization of underground space, he believed that the professionalism of the members can be promoted via this seminar, through the analysis of the utilization and management of the city’s underground space by experts and scholars as well as academic exchange and opinions sharing on new trends in technology. In the meantime, the Committee hopes to improve the technical level of Macau’s related industries as well as facilitate communication and friendship among them.
Over 140 people attended the seminar, including representatives from various government sectors and the engineering sector. The attendees raised an array of issues for the participants to discuss at the last discussion session, highlighting the results of the seminar.
