The 3rd “Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Power Industry Summit” was held on 7 November in Hong Kong. Major power companies in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau include China Southern Power Grid Co. Ltd (CSP), CLP Holdings Limited (CLP), China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGNPC) and Companhia de Electricidade de Macau – CEM. S.A. (CEM). The purpose of the Summit is to strengthen the communication and cooperation and to provide a platform for the top management of the power companies to meet regularly.

Top executives to attend the Summit included CSG President Zhong Jun, CLP Chief Executive Officer Richard Lancaster, CGNPC Board Chairman He Yu, and CEM Chief Executive Officer Franklin Willemyns. CSG, CLP, CGNPC and CEM have been keeping a good bilateral tie for communication and cooperation. The four parties hope to develop a multilateral tie for cooperation in the future by enhancing the exchange of information, knowledge and experience in a bid to achieve further development and cooperation throughout the region. This year with the theme of “Green, Low Carbon, Sustainable Development”, top executives from the four companies discussed and exchanged experiences about the hot topics in the industry – promote the use of green and clean energy, reduce emissions and push sustainable development forward.

Franklin Willemyns, in his speech, expressed that green and sustainable energy is the core of present and future direction within the industry, but to achieve a lower carbon foot print there is a need to invest and to make the community understand that there is a price to be paid for. In other parts of the world, many subsidies for green energy are being reduced or eliminated. This means that a balance has to be found between green energy and what makes economic sense. On the aspect of emission reduction, CEM successfully managed to reduce the emission of NOx and SO2 up to 11% and 9% respectively compared with 2011.

Franklin also presented a series of significant milestones achieved by CEM in 2012, including the successful conclusion of the second 220kV backbone interconnection with GPG of CSG in last Jun. Average System Availability Index (ASAI) performance at 99.9999% and customer satisfaction level at 87.6%, both of them are the best ever results. Towards staff safety, CEM has achieved the ultimate goal – “Zero accidents”, up to 6 November the company has completed 856 days without having accidents.

In addition, CEM Energy Business Management, Power and Networks Dispatch Manager Evan Liu spoke on the theme topic, elaborated CEM’s strategy on green and low carbon development and promotional efforts towards the community. Besides the exploration and application of new technologies, CEM is also committed to promoting electricity saving and using electricity as an eco-option. Promotional events are organized throughout the year to improve the public’s awareness of energy conservation as well as promoting usage of electrified kitchen and electric vehicles.
