Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Power Industry Summit held in Macau

Macau, 10 June 2015

The fifth “Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Power Industry Summit” took place at Grand Hyatt Macau on 9 June. China Southern Power Grid Corporation Limited (CSG) initiated in 2011 that the three regions’ power companies, namely CSG, CLP Holdings Company Limited (CLP) and Companhia de Electricidade de Macau – CEM. S.A. (CEM), take turns to hold the Summit each year in Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau, respectively. China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGNPC) has been invited to participate in the Summit since 2012. The Summit provides a platform for top executives from the four companies to enhance communications and cooperation through regular meetings and exchange sessions, in an effort to enhance the quality of power supply and develop a multilateral partnership in the three regions.

Key executives, including Wang Jiuling, Vice President of CSG, Richard Lancaster, CLP Holdings Chief Executive Officer, He Yu, CGN Chairman and Xu Kaicheng, CEM Chairman of Board of Directors, attended the Summit and discussed topics based on the theme “Green and Renewable energy, sustainable development of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau”. New energy refers to a new source of energy that can be recycled and poses less threat to the environment, which will help achieve the goal of utilizing resources on a sustainable basis. New energy, such as solar energy, wind energy and geothermal energy, comes either directly or indirectly from the sun or the Earth’s internal heat. Nowadays, the development and application of new energy is a major trend, and will become a strong impetus for the development of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau. On top of providing a more comfortable and pollution-free living environment for residents in the regions, new energy will also be able to cater to the demand of economic development to provide green and steady power supply to various industries. Executives of the four companies as well as keynote guest speakers carried out in-depth discussions based on the topic of the Summit and shared their valuable experiences.

Xu Kaicheng said in his welcome speech that he was glad that the fifth “Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Power Industry Summit” was hosted by CEM and took place in Macau. The exploration and application of new energy has become an important topic in the world nowadays, in order to achieve the goals of sustainable utilization of resources and environmental protection as well as meeting the demands for economic and sustainable development. Compared with the use of fossil fuels for power generation, new energy will bring less pollution, which is of great significance for addressing issues such as severe environmental pollution and resource exhaustion. Macau has been exploring the feasibility of solar power generation in recent years, and CEM kicked off a pilot project at the Coloane Power Station a few years ago. Xu expressed his gratitude to CSG for its cooperation with CEM over the past 30 years as well as its support for reliable power supply in Macau, which has laid a foundation for Macau’s stable economic development.

This year, CEM invited Dr. Edwin Liu from the U.S. as a guest speaker. Edwin Liu, Senior Vice President of Smart grid and Grid Management, Nexant Inc., is dedicated to the research on application of state-of-the-art technologies in power system and energy industry. Dr. Liu shared the topic of “Grid Readiness for Futuristic Smart Community” and introduced the power grid resiliency, distributed energy resource penetration and grid readiness initiatives. He also elaborated the energy planning activities in Macau, the U.S., Taiwan and Thailand. Other speakers include Ir Conrad TC Wong, BBS, JP, Chairman of Hong Kong Green Building Council, his speech topic was “Smart Buildings Smart the City”; Dr. Wang Xiangming, Professor, Doctoral Supervisor, School of Marxism, Renmin University of China, Main member of the Marxist Theory Research Team, he shared the topic of “One Belt and One Road Strategy and the Future development of China”.

In addition to keynote speeches and seminars, the 3-day Summit also included a visit to the campus of University of Macau in Hengqin as well as the substation built by CEM on the campus. The visit allowed guests from mainland China and Hong Kong to understand the local application and planning of advanced power technology in Macau as well as to learn from each other to deal with future challenges. It is expected that in the next few years, the power industry will face increasing power demand, and it is crucial for the industry to be fully prepared to satisfy the future demand. Under the pressure of huge power demand, the “Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Power Industry Summit” offers an important platform for the three regions’ power industry to learn from and share with each other on providing safe and reliable power supply as well as actively participate in new energy development, in a bid to contribute to clean energy development in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau. Holding summit regularly can further deepen the cooperation among the power companies in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, as well as promote the exchange of experience and share of innovative thinking within the industry.

Other senior executives attending the Summit include Yu Wenqi, Deputy Director of Planning and Development Department, Wu Jianhong, Deputy Director of Marketing Department, Jiang Yi, Board Chairman of Guangdong Power Grid Co., Ltd.; Betty Yuen, Vice Chairman of CLP Power, Paul Poon, Managing Director of CLP Power, Siu Hung Chan, Managing Director – China of CLP Holdings; Bernie Leong, Chairman of CEM Executive Committee, Shi Yulin, Executive Director, João Travassos da Costa and Benjamin Yue, Principal Advisor to the Executive Committee.
