Macau, 21 January 2016
The “Macau Energy Saving Contest 2015” was held from May to October in 2015 and its award ceremony took place on 21 January 2016 to commend the winning buildings and hotels. To cooperate with the government’s environmental policies as well as to fulfill its corporate social responsibility in protecting the environment, CEM has been joining hands with the Office for the Development of Energy Sector (GDSE) to hold the “Macau Energy Saving Contest” since 2009, along with co-organizers the General Residents Association of Macau, Macau Property Management Business Association, and Macau Hoteliers & Innkeepers Association.
The Award Ceremony was held at Macau Tower and the attending guests included: Echo Lio, GDSE Senior Technician, Lei Weng Kei, Technician of Consumer Council, Chui Meng Man, Director of Property Management Business Association of Macau, Lok Nam Tak, Vice Director of General Residents Association, Ada Chan and William Yong, CEM Customer Liaison Committee members, Shi Yu Lin, CEM Executive Director, Iun Iok Meng, Advisor to CEM Executive Committee, Keegan Cheang, Senior Manager of Customer Services Department and Cecilia Nip, Senior Manager of Communications and Public Affairs Office.
The “Macau Energy Saving Contest” has been successfully held for seven years, with the strong support from Macau residents and hotels as well as an increasing number of participating units every year. The contest included two categories: Public Building Facilities Group and Hotel Group. Based on different subscribed demand, the Hotel Group was divided into A, B and C Group. In 2015, 43 hotels and 393 buildings were enrolled in the contest, saving up to 48 million kWh of electricity. During the seven years, the contest helped save a total of 116.4 million kWh of electricity. Galaxy Macau and Hotel Beverly Plaza, winners of Energy-Saving Concept Award, were invited to introduce their energy-saving initiatives and share their in-progress plans.
Shi Yulin said in the speech at the award ceremony that CEM encourages citizens, organizations and groups to actively participate in energy-saving campaigns and make effective use of resources, which will help reduce pollution and waste while improving their lives, thereby making contributions to maintain a green living environment in Macau. Shi also noted that energy conservation is closely related to sustainable development. Citizens and commercial organizations need to work together to achieve both targets. The power consumption in Macau has hit record highs in recent years, as the hotel industry has seen booming development in Macau and Macau has become a world-renowned city. The hotel industry has actively put in resources to reduce burden on the environment. They map out applicable environmental protection policies based on different operating conditions and allow employees and customers to practice environmental protection, which not only helps save operating costs for hotels, but also enhance hotels’ image in terms of environmental protection and fulfill their social responsibility of environmental protection.
To guarantee the fairness and acceptability of “Macau Energy Saving Contest”, CEM set up a jury consisting of professionals to verify the qualification of the winning units. Judges included Lewis Chan, Macau Consumer Council Executive Committee Member, João Ramos, Chairman of Macau Energy Saving Association, Cheang Io Tung, President of Macau Electromechanics Professionals Association and Andy Tam, Standing Director of Macau Construction Association.
CEM and GDSE will continue to hold “Macau Energy Saving Contest” from May to October 2016, and enrollment will start in April. Residential buildings and the hotel industry are welcomed to participate in the contest. Please visit CEM’s website www.cem-macau.com for details.
