CEM organizes “Solar & Capacitance Model Car Races” in Coloane Power Station with over 500 students participated

CEM hosted today at its Coloane Power Station the 4th edition of the popular “Solar & Capacitance Model Car Races”. Targeting local secondary schools students the event aims at enhancing their consciousness and recognition of the usage of renewable energy, and improving their scientific and technical knowledge and interest in the field. This year, 95 teams in representation of 20 secondary schools, with over 500 students and teachers participated in the competition. The event was co-organized by the Macau Youth Federation, the General Association of Chinese Students of Macau and the Youth Center of Macau Federation of Trade Unions, and with the technical support of Hong Kong Technology & Renewable Energy Events (HK TREE).

The 20 secondary schools participating this year include Sheng Kung Hui Escola Choi Kou (Macau), Colégio Diocesano de São José 5 (Chinese Section), Colégio Diocesano de São José 5 (English Section), Colégio de Santa Rosa de Lima (Chinese Section), Sacred Heart Canossian College (Chinese Section), Yuet Wah College (Chinese Section), Yuet Wah College (English Section), Escola Xin Hua, Escola Nossa Senhora de Fátima, Escola Cham Son de Macau, Escola Secundária Pui Va, Escola Secundária Técnico-Profissional da Associação Geral de Operários de Macau, Escola Tong Sin Tong, Escola para Filhos e Irmãos dos Operários, Escola Fong Chong da Taipa, Escola São João de Brito, Sacred Heart Canossian College (English Section), Escola Portuguesa de Macau, Escola Kwong Tai and Escola Estrela do Mar.

55 teams from F4 to F6 grades joined the “Solar Model Car Race”, and were challenged to design and build their own model cars moved solely by solar panels provided by the organization. While in the “Capacitance Model Care Race” 40 teams from F1 to F3 grades participated, having equally to build their own model cars. They spent thrilled moments together competing among each other for the “Top Ten Teams” in both races, plus “The Overall Fastest Lap Award”, and “Top Three Teams” in “The Best Model Car Design Award” in the ‘Solar Model Car Race’. After rounds of excitement and fierce competition, final results were: ‘The Best Model Car Design Award” Champion was won by Escola Kwong Tai (B), 1st runner-up was Escola Secundária Técnico-Profissional da Associação Geral de Operários de Macau (B) and 2nd runner-up was Yuet Wah College – Chinese Section (D), and received MOP1,000, MOP800 and MOP500 respectively, and one trophy each.

“The Overall Fastest Lap Award” was won by Colégio de Santa Rosa de Lima Chinese Section (B), who received MOP1,000 and one trophy. Top five winning teams of “CEM Capacitance Model Car Race” were Yuet Wah College English Section (B) (Champion), Yuet Wah College Chinese Section (A) (1st Runner-up), Sacred Heart Canossian College Chinese Section (2nd Runner-up), Yuet Wah College Chinese Section (B) (3rd Runner-up) and Escola Secundária Pui Va (4th Runner-up) who received MOP2,000, MOP1,500, MOP1,000, MOP800 and MOP500 respectively, certificates of winning, and a trophy for the top three teams. Teams obtaining 6th to 10th place were awarded with certificates of winning, they were Yuet Wah College English Section (A), Escola Kwong Tai (B), Colégio Diocesano de São José 5 English Section (A), Colégio Diocesano de São José 5 English Section (C) and Colégio Diocesano de São José 5 Chinese Section (A).

Top five teams of “CEM Solar Model Car Race” were Colégio de Santa Rosa de Lima Chinese Section (B) (Champion), Yuet Wah College Chinese Section (A) (1st Runner-up), Sacred Heart Canossian College Chinese Section (B) (2nd Runner-up), Escola Secundária Técnico-Profissional da Associação Geral dos Operários de Macau (A) (3rd Runner-up), and Colégio Diocesano de São José 5 Chinese Section (C) (4th Runner-up) who received MOP3,000, MOP2,000, MOP1,000, MOP800 and MOP500 respectively, certificates of winning, and a trophy for the top three schools. Teams obtaining 6th to 10th place were awarded with certificates of winning, they were Escola Portuguesa de Macau (A), Escola Kwong Tai (D), Colégio Diocesano de São José 5 English Section (A), Escola Fong Chong da Taipa (A) and Escola Xin Hua (A).

Top three winners of both ‘Solar Model Car Race’ and ‘Capacitance Model Car Race’ will be sponsored by CEM to represent Macau to compete in the “Hong Kong TREE 2016”, which is going to be held at the HK Science & Technology Parks on 5 November.

Benjamin Yue, Principal Advisor to CEM Executive Committee said during his speech at the closing ceremony that “We believe that through this contest, we can raise students’ awareness of using renewable energy and let the new generation understand the importance and impact of using renewable energy for protecting our environment.” And also referred that “After watching the exciting races, I think all of us feel impressed with the hard works of the students, and pleased to testimony such enthusiasm and great atmosphere among all the participants.”

Attending honorable guests included Wong Kin Mou, Chief of Department of Research and Educational Resources of Youth & Education Affairs Bureau, Maverick Luk, Chairman of Hong Kong Technology & Renewable Energy Events, Chan Kuai Son, Vice Secretary of Macau Youth Federation, Kuan Ka U, Vice President of the 58th Executive Committee of General Association of Chinese Students of Macau, Charles Leong, Vice President of the Macau Federation of Trade Unions, Iun Iok Meng, Advisor to CEM Executive Committee, Ip Kam Veng, CEM Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Office Senior Manager, Garrick Yuen, Coloane A Power Station Manager of Generation Production Unit of CEM Generation Department, and Jaclyn Iun, CEM Communications and Public Affairs Office Manager.
