CEM “Macau Energy Saving Activity” saves over 300 million kWh of electricity in 12 years

Macau, 26 January 2021

With dedication to providing reliable, safe, sustainable and environment-friendly energy services for Macau, CEM has been organizing various activities to promote energy conservation through different channels. Among the activities, the “Macau Energy Saving Activity” is entering its 12th consecutive year with the support of the General Residents Association of Macau, Property Management Business Association of Macau and Macau Hoteliers and Innkeepers Association. CEM hosted this Activity again between July and October 2020. The Award Ceremony was held at Macau Tower Convention & Entertainment Centre on 26 January 2021.

Guests attending the ceremony included: Samio Lou, Head of Development and Management of the Energy Sector Department of Environmental Protection Bureau; Chao Kuan I, Vice President of Property Management Business Association of Macau; Holly Ng, Deputy Secretary-General of General Residents Association of Macau; Kuok Lam Sek, Director of Macau Energy Saving Association Vong Kok Seng and Lei Chi Fong, President and Vice President of CEM Customer Liaison Committee; Lau Veng Lin, Wang Yi, William Yong, Yeong Keng Hoi, Ieong Ka Wai Osborn Lou and Cynthia Chong, Members of CEM Customer Liaison Committee; Benjamin Yue, Principal Advisor to CEM Executive Committee; Iun Iok Meng, Advisor to CEM Executive Committee; Edmond Etchri, Director of CEM General Department; Uman Cheang, Director of CEM Customer Services Department and Cecilia Nip, Director of Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Communications Office.

A jury comprised of professionals in Macau was formed to make the final judgment on all categories of the Contest. Representatives of the judges include Maggie Lei, Head of Publicity and Education Team of Macau Consumer Council; João Ramos, President of Macau Energy Saving Association; Cheang Io Tung, Director of Macau Electromechanics Professionals Association; Andy Tam, Standing Director of Macau Association of Building Contractors and Developers and Tomas Leong, Council of Macau Association of Consumers of Public Utility Companies.

In his speech, Benjamin Yue said that Macau economy and residents’ life have been seriously battered by the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic last year, but the public still enthusiastically participated in the “Macau Energy Saving Activity”. A total of 46 hotels and 508 buildings have taken part in the Contest and a record of 6,536 people have registered for the “5% Energy Saving Action” Lucky Draw. From July to October 2020, all participants have saved a total of over 106 million kWh of electricity. In the past 12 years, a total of over 316 million kWh of electricity was saved during the Activity and more than 258 million kilograms of carbon emissions were reduced, equivalent to the planting of 11.7 million trees. Benjamin Yue hopes all walks of life will not forget environmental protection and energy conservation while working hard to promote Macau’s economic recovery after the pandemic has gradually eased. As economic development and environmental protection are correlated, a sustainable society can only be achieved when all stakeholders strike a balance.

The “Macau Energy Saving Activity 2020” calculated the four consecutive billing months of electricity consumption from July to October 2020 with the same period in 2019. Participating buildings and hotels/resorts which saved the highest percentage of energy are the winners of the Contest. The Activity has achieved great success. Edifício Yan Fu won the Champion in the Residential Building Public Facilities Group, reduced electricity consumption up to 54.4% year on year during the period. “Hotel Group A Champion – East Asia Hotel” and “Hotel Group B Champion – The Macau Roosevelt” reduced electricity consumption by over 52.6% and 31.1%, respectively. “Continuous Energy Saving Award” was set up again this year to acknowledge the hotel industry for their continuous efforts in energy conservation. A total of six hotels have reduced electricity consumption from July to October in 2018, 2019 and 2020. The “Energy Saving Concept Award” is awarded to Galaxy Macau. Galaxy Macau and Macau Fisherman’s Wharf, applicants of this award, were invited to share their energy-saving measures at the Award Ceremony. Representatives of property owners of winning buildings and winners of the “5% Energy Conservation Action” Lucky Draw were also invited to attend the Award Ceremony.

Justin Ng, Sustainability Life Cycle Management Assistant Vice President of Galaxy Macau stated that Galaxy Macau™ has adopted the international standards in ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and ISO 50001 Energy Management System to enhance for establishing an effective management system in both hotels and heart of house area to promote green and sustainable development. Since opening of Galaxy Macau, the properties have been implemented numbers of energy conservation measure and energy efficient technology across all business aspects such as the optimization of chiller plants; LEDs replacement program; optimization of central air system based on real time weather-conditions; and electric heating for hot water system.  The resort property has yearly achieved over 3% to 6% energy savings.

George P. Marques, Vice President of Facilities Management of Macau Legend Development believes that innovations play a very important role in energy savings like replacing high energy consumption motors to super-efficient motors, conversion of all lights to LEDs, chiller plant commissioning, Internet of Things (IoT), smart valves, VSDs and a PMS( Power Monitoring System) throughout the properties. The standard will be raised again in 2021.  In order to further improve the environmental awareness of employees, the “Lights Out Once a Month” has been changed to “Once A Week”, which is not only implemented in the workplace, but employees will also support participation at home to save energy and resources for the planet.
