CEM enhances household electrical safety for elderly living in social housing units

Macau, 27 January 2021

CEM has teamed up with the Housing Bureau for the fourth consecutive year to provide free inspection and maintenance of household electrical installations for seniors who live in social housing units. This year total 20 seniors referred by the Housing Bureau were assisted to enhance their electrical safety at home. Jaclyn Iun, Senior Manager of CEM Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Communications Office, visited the seniors with the representatives from the Housing Bureau, presented the seniors with lucky gift bags and extended their greetings and blessings for the upcoming Chinese New Year.

Jaclyn Iun said that CEM has been promoting electrical safety and electricity saving through various promotion channels and activities. CEM also pays special attention to the electrical safety of seniors who live in solitude, under-privileged families and those with special needs. This is because issues always arise from lack of maintenance of household electrical installations, which not only affects daily electricity usage, but also increases potential hazards to household electrical safety. Therefore, Jaclyn Iun hoped that through the Community Program, CEM can help inspect and repair electrical installations while promoting electrical safety. As Chinese New Year is around the corner, she wished the elderly health and all the best in the coming year.

Lei Shang Noi, a 94-year-old citizen, expressed gratitude to the volunteers of CEM and the Housing Bureau for their help in inspecting and repairing her household electrical installations. Due to COVID-19, she has been staying at home for a long time and it was hard for her to find an electrician to repair the malfunctioned lights or electrical appliances since the work was insignificant. When the weather turned cold, she dared not use fan heater due to fear of danger. She was glad that CEM’s professional electricians examined his electrical installations and patiently explained the electrical safety rules to him. She can finally spend the Chinese New Year with peace of mind.

CEM launched its Community Program in 2000, becoming one of the first organizations in Macau to launch such services. Through the Program, CEM’s volunteer electricians provide free safety inspection and maintenance of household electrical installations for seniors who live in solitude, under-privileged families as well as people with special needs. Besides accepting referred cases from local associations, CEM also welcomes citizens to refer disadvantaged individuals in need (those to receive assistance shall hold valid Beneficiary Cards issued by the Social Welfare Bureau).
