To support the Macau SAR Government’s environmental protection policy and promote energy efficiency and conservation, CEM has joined hands with  the Office for the Development of the Energy Sector to hold “Macau Energy Saving Activity” for 12 consecutive years, inviting all Macau residential customers, property owner committees, property management companies, hotels and resorts to participate in the event. All participating units saved a total of over 209 million kWh of electricity and reduced carbon emissions by over 58 million kilograms, which is equivalent to the planting of 2.5 million trees.

The “Energy Saving and Safety Seminars” held earlier by CEM in collaboration with the General Residents Association of Macau (UGAMM); Macau Federation of Trade Unions (FAOM); and the Macau Institution of People’s Alliance (API). The attending representatives were Chio Lan Ieng, Vice President of FAOM and Wong Sio San, Director of Toi San Community Centre of FAOM; Ao Ieong Kuong Kao, Vice President of API and Un Hon Kuan, Vice President & Building Affairs Committee Director of API; Cheong Un Si, Deputy Director of the Social Service Office of UGAMM and Vong Hio Chong, Acting Director of Civic Education Center of UGAMM. CEM representatives include personnel from Customer Services Department: Uman Cheang, Director; Charles Leong, Technical Services Management Senior Manager, and Joyce Lao, Customer Contact Management Senior Manager; as well as Cecilia Nip and Jaclyn Iun, Director and Senior Manager of Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Communications Office.

The seminars were delivered by Aidan Cheang, Cilia Cheng and Maggie Lei from Customer Contact Management Officers of CEM Customer Services Department, together with Colin Ng and Jeffery Chan from Engineers of Technical Services Management of CEM Customer Services Department. The topics comprised of CEM customer services, household energy safety and saving tips as well as the importance of regular inspection and maintenance of communal electrical installations in buildings, and so forth.

At the Seminars, CEM representatives encouraged citizens to bind their electricity bills or e-Service accounts in CEM WeChat or subscribe to individual buildings in order to receive push notifications for the power supply status of relevant buildings due to storm surges during typhoons. Meanwhile, CEM engineers introduced the basic knowledge of energy saving and how to efficiently use energy and home appliances safely.

Besides, CEM representatives introduced the rights and responsibilities of the communal electrical installations in buildings and identified the issues and potential risks for lacking maintenance. At present, there are more than 4,000 buildings of over 30 years old in Macau. The communal electrical installations in some of these buildings are dilapidated, load reaching the design limit and failing to meet existing technical requirements, and other issues. CEM has issued over 300 notices and notified over 20,000 property owners through special reminding messages on the electricity bills in the past three years. CEM representatives urged property owners to treat the issues seriously by hiring experienced electrical contractors to examine and repair communal electrical installations regularly. Lack of maintenance on the communal electrical installations could result in short circuit faults and even fires, which could cause serious damages to the power facilities and post threats to personal safety.

At the end of the Seminars, CEM assisted attendees to register the “5% Energy Saving Action” Lucky Draw, which is one of the activities of the series of “Macau Energy Saving Activity” for Tariff Group A residential customers, aiming to encourage residents to apply energy saving knowledge into daily lives and develop the habit of energy saving. Residential customers can participate in the lucky draw after registration. They are competing to save 5% or more electricity during the four consecutive months from July to October 2020, which will be compared to the same period in 2019, to win prizes totaling MOP 90,000.
