CEM “Macau Energy Saving Activity” saves over 380 million kWh of electricity in 14 straight years
Macau, 12 January 2023
CEM has been organizing the “Macau Energy Saving Activity” since 2009. Last year, CEM joined hands with the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) to hold the Activity again, with the General Residents Association of Macau, the Property Management Business Association of Macau, as well as Macau Hoteliers and Innkeepers Association as co-organizers to promote the sustainable development of Macau and build a green and low-carbon society with all Macau citizens. The Activity has been successfully completed and the Award Ceremony was held at Macau Tower Convention & Entertainment Centre in the afternoon of 12 January 2023.
Guests attending the Award Ceremony included: Un In Lin, Head of DSPA Environment Publicity, Education and Cooperation Department; Lou Chi Leong, Director of Macau Hoteliers and Innkeepers Association; Sit Un Na, Vice President of Property Management Business Association of Macau; Holly Ng, Deputy Secretary-General of General Residents Association of Macau; Vong Kok Seng and Wong Kin Chong, President and Vice President of CEM Customer Liaison Committee; Lau Veng Lin, Jenefin Fong, Ung Sio Hong, Yuan Han Jun, Leong Meng Ian, Chen Li Xin, Ada Chan, Fong Kin Fu, Ieong Weng Seng, Yeong Keng Hoi and Osborn Lo, Members of CEM Customer Liaison Committee; Benjamin Yue, Principal Advisor to CEM Executive Committee; Uman Cheang, Director of CEM Customer Services Department and Cecilia Nip, Director of Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Communications Office.
A jury comprised of professionals made the final judgment on all categories of the contest. The judges include Maggie Lei, Head of Publicity and Education Team of Macau Consumer Council; João Ramos, President of Macau Energy Saving Association; Cheang Io Tung, Director of Macau Electromechanics Professionals Association; Andy Tam, Standing Director of Macau Association of Building Contractors and Developers and Tomas Leong, Council of Macau Association of Consumers of Public Utility Companies.
At the Award Ceremony, Benjamin Yue said that it has become a megatrend to adopt low-carbon energy and promote energy conservation to tackle the problem of climate change around the world. In response to China’s pledge of achieving carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060 and to support the Macau SAR Government to contribute to the efforts, CEM has formulated a master plan for green development and will implement it by phases, in the hope of building a reliable, green and high-quality power supply system for Macau. Therefore, while continuously maintaining the power supply reliability at the world’s top level of 99.9999%, CEM holds different activities every year to promote energy conservation and a green and low-carbon lifestyle to the public, so as to fulfill the core values and missions of corporate social responsibility. CEM calls on all walks of life to adopt a green recovery mode to bring the economy back to normal after the pandemic, that is, saving energy, reducing carbon emissions and jointly advancing towards the dual carbon goals while driving economic growth. CEM will continue to align with the Macau SAR Government’s green energy policies and join hands with the community to pitch in the efforts towards the dual carbon goals.
Although Macau citizens and various industries faced severe challenges due to the impact of the pandemic last year, the public actively participated in the “Macau Energy Saving Activity” and upheld energy saving and carbon reduction. A total of 46 hotels and 517 buildings have taken part in the contest and 3,580 people have registered for the “5% Energy Saving Action” Lucky Draw. During the contest period from July to October last year, all participating units jointly saved a total of more than 64 million kWh of electricity. Over the past 14 years, a total of more than 382 million kWh of electricity was saved during the Activity and more than 237 million kilograms of carbon emissions* were reduced, equivalent to the planting of 10.3 million trees^.
The “Macau Energy Saving Activity 2022” was held from July to October 2022. However, due to the pandemic outbreak in Macau in June 2022, CEM was unable to carry out meter reading for some participants in June and July. To ensure fairness, the Activity was based on the total readings of September and October, compared with the electricity consumption in the same period in 2021 for all participating categories. In each category, participating buildings, hotels or resorts which saved the highest percentage of energy are the winners.
The Activity has achieved great success. “Residential Building Public Facilities Group Champion - Star River - Windsor Arch BL 1” reduced electricity consumption up to 46.9% year on year during the contest period. “Hotel Group A Champion – Caravel Hotel” and “Hotel Group B Champion – Hotel Rio” reduced electricity consumption by over 20.9% and 44.2%, respectively. “Continuous Energy Saving Award” was set up again this year to acknowledge the hotel industry for their continuous efforts in energy conservation. A total of ten hotels have reduced electricity consumption during the contest period. “Broadway Macau”, winner of “Excellence Award” and “Continuous Energy Saving Award”, was invited to share their experience on energy saving at the Award Ceremony.
Justin Ng, Assistant Vice President of Sustainability and Technical Services of Galaxy Macau shared that energy conservation and carbon reduction are one of the key focuses in Galaxy Entertainment Group’s (GEG) sustainability and decarbonization strategies. To effectively manage the energy consumption and minimize the carbon emission in one of the largest integrated resorts in the world, Galaxy Macau Phase 1, Phase 2 and Broadway Macau have adopted the international standards in ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and ISO 50001 Energy Management System to continuously enhance the management system in the hotels and back of house area. Since its opening, Broadway Macau has implemented a number of environmental protection and energy saving measures to be put into practice across all business aspects. The hotel has reduced over millions of kWh of energy in the past couple of years through making substantial investment in facility and equipment optimization, such as replacement of cooling tower to improve the rate of heat transfer; use of green and high-efficient LEDs and motion sensors; gradual installation of variable speed devices in central air conditioning system; application of precise temperature control technology to improve the efficiency of air handling system and ventilation system; using electrical heating for hot water production; installing green materials in the swimming pool to improve the energy and water efficiency. Through the improvement works, Broadway Macau achieved more than 5% of energy saving annually.
