CEM participated in the 11th Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Power Industry Summit

6 June 2023, Macau

The Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Power Industry Summit (the Summit), which is hosted in turn by China Southern Power Grid Company Limited (CSG), CLP Holdings Limited (CLP), Companhia de Electricidade de Macau – CEM. S.A. (CEM), and China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN), took place at the Island Shangri-La Hong Kong on 1 June. The 11th Summit, organized by CLP, with the theme "Embrace Opportunities in Decarbonization and the Greater Bay Area (GBA)", aims to discuss and envision the green development of power enterprises in the GBA in the course of achieving the goal of carbon neutrality and carbon peak. CLP Holdings CEO Richard Lancaster, CSG Board Chairman Meng Zhenping, CGN Chairman Yang Changli, and CEM Chairman of the Board of Directors Fu Jianguo attended the Summit.

In his speech at the opening ceremony, Fu Jianguo indicated that the four power companies across the three regions have an incumbent responsibility to join hands, thanks to their geographical proximity, to make concerted efforts to build a diversified and clean power supply system in line with the country’s strategic policy of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. The collaboration could support the rapid development and takeoff of the GBA, which is also the shared vision of the people in the region. All the participating enterprises have put upon themselves the weight of the mission and the challenge of a long journey ahead. Fu Jianguo mentioned that to actively support the country’s “dual carbon” goal, CEM has kept researching to optimize its power supply network, promote the digitalization of its grid operations, and adopt renewable energy. Its power supply reliability has consistently topped the world, injecting ebullient energy into the sustainable and smart development of Macau.

Keynote speeches were delivered at the Summit by Frank Chan, Hong Kong Deputy to the National People’s Congress; Mike Thomas, Managing Director of The Lantau Group; Professor Guan Chenghua from Beijing Normal University; Professor Shih Yicheng from Central University of Finance and Economics; Professor Charles Ng, Vice President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou);and Sun Fuyou, Vice President of Huawei, etc. Their speeches touched upon various areas, including the implications of the policies, GBA integration, green technology, green economy, digital grids, and more. The speakers also had in-depth discussions with attendees over different topics.

Since the release of the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, the four power companies from the three regions have launched into cooperation with pragmatism in the areas of ensuring power supply, promoting green development, and driving digital transformation, and these efforts have yielded significant results. To build upon and deepen the achievements already accomplished, the participating enterprises unveiled a manifesto to call on all stakeholders to actively support the national dual carbon goals, accelerate the coordinated digital transformation, push forward the innovation and cooperation in energy technologies, strengthen energy network security, establish an emergency response mechanism for power disruptions, and forge a closer energy partnership within the GBA. The “Framework Agreement on the Emergency Response of Four Power Companies in Three Areas within the Greater Bay Area” was also signed during the Summit.

The Summit, which debuted in Macau in 2011, has become a cultural branding event in the power industry in the GBA, serving as an important platform for power enterprises in the GBA to build consensus and promote synergic development.
