Companhia de Electricidade de Macau - CEM, S.A. (CEM) has been offering the Community Program since 2000, in which CEM volunteer technicians provide free safety inspections and repairs of home electrical installations for elderly people living alone, disadvantaged families, and individuals with special needs. This year, CEM commissioned the Association of CEM & SAAM Workers to organize retired electricians to expand the volunteer team, so that the retired electricians could make a difference and help themselves while assisting others. They provided related services to 50 elderly people in need and distributed heaters to help the elderly prepare for the winter.

The Community Program received enthusiastic responses from the Macau Federation of Trade Unions, General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau, Women's General Association of Macau, Macau Institution of People's Alliance, and Caritas Macau. The elderly beneficiaries expressed their gratitude for this practical and thoughtful service, which corrected many unsafe electrical practices and allowed them to have a safe and warm winter.

Five retired electricians aged 65 to 70 were selected to form a volunteer team. They are Ho Siu Cheong, Fong Kin Keong, Chu Tak Wa, Leong Kin Wing, and Lei Seng Fat. With decades of experience in the power industry, they possess extensive professional skills and knowledge. Leong Kin Wing said that he hopes to give back to the society by participating in this activity organized by CEM, so that more elderly people in need can feel the care and warmth of the society. He also hopes to attract attention from all walks of life to the electrical safety issues of the elderly.

CEM’s Community Program will continue to be carried out. Besides accepting referred cases from local organizations, the program also welcomes citizens to refer individuals in need to CEM (those to receive assistance shall hold valid Beneficiary Cards issued by the Social Welfare Bureau).
