CEM “Macau Energy Saving Activity” supports the national "dual carbon" goals

Macau, 20 March 2024

Companhia de Electricidade de Macau (CEM) actively supports the Macau SAR Government's carbon reduction work and the national goals of achieving "dual carbon", by continuously holding energy saving and environmental protection activities to promote energy conservation and energy efficiency to Macau residents and customers from different sectors. Last year, CEM co-organized the "Macau Energy Saving Activity" with Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) again, which was already in its 15th year, with the General Residents Association of Macau, the Property Management Business Association of Macau, as well as Macau Hoteliers and Innkeepers Association as co-organizers. The Activity has been successfully completed and the Award Ceremony was held at Macau Tower Convention & Entertainment Centre in the afternoon of 20 March 2024.

Guests attending the Award Ceremony included: Jessie Vong, Head of DSPA Environment Publicity and Education Division; Lou Chi Leong, Director of Macau Hoteliers and Innkeepers Association; Sit Un Na, Director of Property Management Business Association of Macau; Cheng Son Meng, Deputy Director of General Residents Association of Macau; Vong Kok Seng and Kenny Cheung, President and Vice President of CEM Customer Liaison Committee; Jenefin Fong, Ung Sio Hong, Yuan Han Jun, Leong Meng Ian, Chen Li Xin, Ada Chan, Fong Kin Fu, Ieong Ka Wai and Lau Veng Lin, Members of CEM Customer Liaison Committee; Benjamin Yue, Principal Advisor to CEM Executive Committee; Edmond Etchri, Director of CEM Generation Department; Chris Chao, Director of CEM Customer Services Department, Hellen Lok, Acting Director of CEM Human Resources and Sustainability Department and Cecilia Nip, Director of CEM Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Communications Office.

A jury comprised of professionals made the final judgment on all categories of the contest. The judges include Maggie Lei, Head of Publicity and Education Team of Macau Consumer Council; João Ramos, President of Macau Energy Saving Association; Cheang Io Tung, Director of Macau Electromechanics Professionals Association; Andy Tam, Standing Director of Macau Association of Building Contractors and Developers and Tomas Leong, Council of Macau Association of Consumers of Public Utility Companies.

At the Award Ceremony, Benjamin Yue said that CEM has spared no effort in promoting the efficient and saving of energy. It is hoped that through innovative and diversified measures, residents, institutions and associations could be encouraged to participate in energy saving and environmental protection activities, and effectively utilize global resources. In addition to the annual energy saving competition and Energy Saving and Safety Seminars, CEM last year hosted an eco market using EV trunks as medium for the first time. This allowed citizens to have close contact with various EV. In addition, with the support of DSPA and China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd., CEM completed the signing of the first 5.2 million kWh GEC trading agreement between Guangdong and Macau with China Southern Power Grid International in Macau last December, which contributes the green development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area and push forward the implementation of Macau's “dual carbon” goals.

Last year, a total of 45 hotels and 597 buildings took part in the contest and 3,281 people registered for the “5% Energy Saving Action” Lucky Draw. The participants of Residential Building Public Facilities Group and “5% Energy Saving Action” Lucky Draw compared their electricity consumption of four billing months from September to December 2023 to the same period of 2022. “Residential Building Public Facilities Group Champion - Edf. Mei Kui Kuong Cheong Phase 1 Block 4” reduced electricity consumption up to 55.4% year on year during the contest period.

During the contest period from September to December last year, the participants of Residential Building Public Facilities Group and “5% Energy Saving Action” Lucky Draw jointly saved a total of more than 6.4 million kWh of electricity. Over the past 15 years, a total of more than 383 million kWh of electricity was saved during the Activity and more than 233 million kilograms of carbon emissions* were reduced, equivalent to the planting of 10 million trees^.

In view of the fact that Macau was still affected by COVID-19 in 2022, it could not reflect the electricity consumption of the hotel industry under normal circumstances. After discussion with the judges, CEM made a slight modification to the year of electricity consumption comparison in the guidelines. Comparison was revised to be based on the electricity consumption from September to December 2023 with the same period in 2019. Hotel Group A Champion – I Fu Hotel” and “Hotel Group B Champion – Waldo Hotel” reduced electricity consumption by over 31.1% and 39.5%, respectively. Energy Saving Concept Award winner – Galaxy Macau” were invited to share their energy-saving measures at the Award Ceremony.

Sam Chan, Senior Manager of Galaxy Macau shared that Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) has been supporting the Macau SAR Government’s environmental protection policies and incorporate energy conservation and sustainability into our business strategy. Since operation, its Galaxy Macau™ Integrated Resort has implemented more than 100 energy-saving initiatives. These include optimizing the performance of chiller systems, reusing condensate collected from air conditioning systems, implementing a condenser water temperature reset strategy, replacing and upgrading air conditioning pipe insulation to prevent heat loss, and implementing an intelligent Internet of Things office system. In addition, Galaxy has also proactively organized trainings and workshops to help team members enhance their energy conservation awareness.
