CEM visited Zhuhai Power Supply Bureau to discuss power development in the Guangdong-Macau In-Depth Cooperation Zone
24 June 2024, Macau
To strengthen the cooperation in power supply between Macau and Zhuhai and ensure the stable operation of the Guangdong-Macau interconnections, Bernie Leong, Chairman of the Executive Committee of Companhia de Electricidade de Macau - CEM, S.A. (CEM), led a delegation to visit China Southern Power Grid (CSG)’s Zhuhai Power Supply Bureau in Guangdong recently. The delegation was warmly received by Gao Zhihua, Secretary of the Party Committee, Deputy General Manager of Zhuhai Power Supply Bureau, and General Manager of Hengqin Power Supply Bureau. Both sides had in-depth exchanges and discussions on the cooperation and development of clean energy in the Guangdong-Macau In-Depth Cooperation Zone.
During the meeting, Bernie Leong said that building a new power system in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) plays an important role in helping the country achieve the “dual carbon” target. CEM and Zhuhai Power Supply Bureau should follow the spirit of the “Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area” and make full use of the Macau-Hengqin platform to deepen their cooperation in the power sector. Last year, CEM and China Southern Power Grid International (CSGI) completed the first Green Electricity Certificate transaction of 5.2 million kWh between Guangdong and Macau, opening a new page for the development of clean energy in the GBA. In the future, CEM will actively explore power supply services related to green transportation and customer service, etc. in the Cooperation Zone.
Gao Zhihua and relevant personnel from Zhuhai Power Supply Bureau introduced the overall power supply situation in Zhuhai and the recent development trends of the bureau to the CEM delegation. They highlighted the achievements of Zhuhai Power Supply Bureau in new AC-DC hybrid technology and discussed with CEM about its potential application scenarios in Macau. Meanwhile, they invited CEM to jointly participate in the construction of the Hengqin Digital Zero-Carbon Island Shared Laboratory, aiming to jointly contribute to the national “dual carbon” goals. They also expressed their hope that CEM would pay attention to and participate in the ongoing establishment of the International Green Energy Certification Center in the Guangdong-Macau In-Depth Cooperation Zone of Hengqin.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Macau’s return to the motherland and the 40th anniversary of the interconnection between Guangdong and Macau. Both sides will further strengthen cooperation to make good preparations for celebrating the 25th anniversary of the return of Macau. As the peak electricity consumption period is approaching in summer, all of the Guangdong-Macau interconnections are operating normally. CEM expects to face the electricity peak load in July. Both sides have reached a consensus on the matter of dealing with the summer peak demand and will organize emergency drills to prepare for any potential emergencies.
Before the meeting, the CEM delegation also visited the demonstration center of the Zhuhai multi-terminal flexible DC distribution grid project. This project is the core component of the first batch of energy “Internet+” demonstration projects of the National Energy Administration, achieving a leap from laboratory to engineering application of flexible DC distribution technology. It is an important exploration for China to build a DC distribution grid and promote energy Internet technology.
Participants included Benjamin Yue, Principal Advisor to CEM Executive Committee; Evan Liu, Director of Power and Networks Dispatch Department; Simon Young, Director of Transmission and Distribution Department (Power Network Management); Chris Chao, Director of the Customer Services Department; He Jianzong, General Manager of Zhuhai Power Supply Bureau and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee; Li Zhencong, Deputy General Manager of Zhuhai Power Supply Bureau; Luo Ke, General Manager of the Planning and Development Department of Zhuhai Power Supply Bureau, among others.
