CEM and GPG Signed Agreement to Jointly Strategize New Quality Development of the Greater Bay Area Energy Industry
26 July 2024, Macau
On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Guangdong-Macau interconnection, Companhia de Electricidade de Macau - CEM, S.A. (CEM) and Guangdong Power Grid Co., Ltd. (GPG) signed the “Framework Agreement on Exchange and Cooperation” (“the Agreement”) at the Hengqin Digital Zero-Carbon Island Shared Laboratory. Representatives of the governments, enterprises, media and customer representatives from Guangdong and Macau attended the signing ceremony, jointly exploring the high-quality development of the energy industry in the Greater Bay Area (GBA).
At the ceremony, Bernie Leong, Chairman of the CEM Executive Committee, expressed gratitude to the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR, the Macau SAR Government, and all sectors of society for their long-term support and concern for the development of Macau’s power industry. He also extended his thanks to peers such as China Southern Power Grid (CSG), GPG and Zhuhai Power Supply Bureau. Last year, CEM completed the first Green Electricity Certificate (GEC) transaction of 5.2 million kWh between Guangdong and Macau, and successfully realized the first megawatt-level solar photovoltaic power generation project to be connected to the grid. As of June this year, CEM’s smart meter coverage rate exceeded 95%, and EV charging facilities covered 97% of public car parks. Bernie Leong said that CEM has formulated the “CEM Low-Carbon Development Pathway” in alignment with China’s national “dual carbon” goals and Macau SAR’s “Long-term Carbon Reduction Strategy,” striving for carbon reduction and emission reduction across the entire power industry chain. Seizing the opportunity of accelerating the development of new quality productive forces, the signing of “the Agreement” will further unite Guangdong and Macau in ensuring the safe and stable operation of the Guangdong-Macau interconnection, accelerating the digital development of the energy industry in the GBA, and adding green vitality to the common home of their people.
“The Agreement” was signed by Zhang Jian, Executive Director of CEM Executive Committee and Ruan Mianhui, Deputy General Manager of GPG. It was witnessed by Wu Zuqing, Deputy Director of the Civilization Office of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee; Fu Yongge, Deputy Director of the Executive Committee of Guangdong-Macau In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin; Samio Lou, Head of Development and Management of the Energy Sector Department of Environmental Protection Bureau of the Macau SAR; Lu Shangcheng, Assistant of the Economic Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR; Bernie Leong, Chairman of CEM Executive Committee and Huang Weiliang, General Manager of GPG.
After the signing ceremony, the attendees visited the Hengqin Digital Zero-Carbon Island Shared Laboratory, which was jointly built by Guangdong and Macau. The laboratory focuses on cutting-edge directions such as new energy grid connection, advanced power transmission, and smart city power distribution and utilization, with a particular emphasis on research and development in offshore wind power, distributed photovoltaics, new energy storage, intelligent power distribution and utilization, and smart energy consumption. It promotes the coordinated transformation towards digitization and greening in the energy sector, serving the high-quality development of the GBA.
Other attending CEM representatives included Evan Liu, Director of Power and Networks Dispatch Department; Simon Young, Director of Transmission and Distribution Department (Power Network Management); Chris Chao, Director of Customer Services Department and Cecilia Nip, Director of Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Communications Office, among others.
