CEM holds Rummikub Competition with 320 people participating to encourage intergenerational communication

Macau, 12 October 2024

Companhia de Electricidade de Macau - CEM, S.A. (CEM) hosted the Rummikub Competition again at Macau Fisherman’s Wharf Convention and Exhibition Centre today (12 October), which has come to its third edition and has been well received by the public. By bringing people of different ages and backgrounds together to compete, CEM aims to enhance social inclusion and intergenerational communication, also to raise awareness of the importance of developing a harmonious community and an inclusive society. The competition was co-organized with the Macau Federation of Trade Unions and the General Volunteers Association of Macao, and supported by Babyboom. All proceeds from the competition will be donated to the beneficiary Fuhong Society of Macau.

The competition was divided into two categories: the “School Group” and the “Open Group”. Both categories saw higher numbers of applicants than in 2023. A total of 62 teams from 35 schools registered for the “School Group”, and 40 teams were selected to participate in the competition through a draw. The “Open Group” received over 600 applications, surpassing last year’s number, indicating the popularity of the event among the public. As the number of applicants exceeded the upper limit, a total of 320 players were selected through a lucky draw to battle it out for the multiple awards. To encourage intergenerational harmony, this year’s “Open Group” was open to minors aged between 8 and 17. Of all the players, the youngest one was only 8 years old, while the oldest was aged 93. The competition, with players coming from diverse age groups competing on the same table, has fostered harmony between the older and the younger generations and promoted intergenerational communication.

The competitions were held in the morning for the School Group and in the afternoon for the Open Group. Competition for each group was conducted in three rounds: preliminary, semi-final and final. The contestants have all been well-prepared and geared up, bringing the spectators an intense and exciting competition. Guests attending the award ceremony included: Ms. Leong Meng Ian, Deputy Secretary General of Macau Federation of Trade Unions; Ms. Ou Yuna, Director of General Volunteers Association of Macao; Mr. Chan Choi Fat,Chairman of Management Committee of Fuhong Society of Macau; Ms. Sham Kin Ho, Sales Manager of Babyboom; and Ms. Jaclyn Iun, Senior Manager of CEM Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Communications Office.

The competition has been well-received by the public since its inception, and this year’s turnout exceeded expectations, with over 600 people registering for the Open Group. It is expected that Rummikub, a game for all ages, will bridge the generation gap and encourage dialogues and acceptance between different age groups. CEM also hopes that people from all walks of life will come together to care more about the underprivileged groups in Macau and provide them with a more inclusive and friendly living environment.

Chan Choi Fat from Fuhong Society of Macau thanked CEM for its meticulous planning and efforts, as well as its continuous attention to the services of Fuhong Society and the needs of people with disabilities.
