Companhia de Electricidade de Macau - CEM, S.A. (CEM) is committed to providing stable and reliable power supply services to all Macau citizens. As of last year, based on CEM's responsibility, the power supply reliability reached a world-leading level of 99.9999% for the fourth consecutive year. To meet the increasing demand for electricity in the Barra district and further ensure the stability and reliability of Macau's power grid operation, CEM will construct the Barra high-voltage Substation adjacent to Avenida Panorâmica Do Lago Sai Van. This project aims to meet the power load challenges brought by future urban development by enhancing power supply capacity and ensuring the power demand of residents and commercial activities.
During the project's progression, CEM conducted comprehensive and detailed studies of the environmental impact of the construction. After an assessment by the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM), it was confirmed that the construction of the substation would affect 77 trees. In order to minimize the impact on urban greening, IAM experts carefully classified the trees and determined that 31 of them were suitable for transplantation, while the remaining 46 needed to be removed due to their growth conditions, location restrictions and other factors. After receiving IAM's suggestions, CEM has promised, as a compensatory measure for this environmental change, to plant 118 trees in various locations throughout Macau, the islands, and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge Artificial Island. CEM also pays attention to ecological diversity in the selection of tree species, striving to restore and enhance the greening level of Macau city.
It is worth mentioning that the Barra Substation incorporates green and environmentally friendly concepts from the outset of its design. It is planned to green approximately 50% of the substation’s rooftop area and plant vegetation with strong adaptability and good landscape effects to make it to coexist harmoniously with the surrounding natural landscape and become another landmark green power facility of CEM, following the Pac On Substation.
CEM has always adhered to the principle of sustainable development and is committed to contributing to the realization of the national "dual carbon goals" through technological innovation and environmentally friendly practices. CEM now has a total of 27 main substations. The construction of the Barra Substation not only upgrades Macau's power infrastructure but also demonstrates CEM's strong commitment to protecting and optimizing the community environment, as well as jointly building and sharing a livable and business-friendly Macau during its corporate operations.
