"Macau Energy Saving Activity" saved more than 390 million kWh of electricity in 16 years
Macau, 22 January 2025
CEM organizes a variety of activities every year to gather the strength from different sectors of the society, promote the concepts of environmental protection, energy conservation and sustainable development to different areas of Macau, and jointly build a low-carbon and beautiful home. Last year, CEM co-organized the "Macau Energy Saving Activity" with Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) again, which was already in its 16th year, with the General Residents Association of Macau, Macau Hoteliers and Innkeepers Association, as well as the Property Management Business Association of Macau as co-organizers. The Activity has been successfully completed and the Award Ceremony was held at Macau Tower Convention & Entertainment Centre in the afternoon of 22 January 2025. The ceremony featured keynote speeches by Wang Xuezhi, Consultant of Macau Energy Saving Association and Dr. Paul S K Sat, Head of Industry Practices and Research of Hong Kong Green Building Council, who shared energy-saving knowledge and experiences with the hotel industry.
Guests attending the Award Ceremony included: Wong Kai Man, Acting Head of DSPA Environment Publicity and Education Division; Chan Ka Leong, Director of General Residents Association of Macau; Lou Chi Leong, Director of Macau Hoteliers and Innkeepers Association; Sit Un Na, Director of Property Management Business Association of Macau; Vong Kok Seng President of CEM Customer Liaison Committee; Jenefin Fong, Alan Ho, Lee Koi Ian, Lei Ka In, Yuan Han Jun, Chen Li Xin, Ada Chan, Pang Kan Cheng, Ieong Weng Seng and Ieong Ka Wai, Members of CEM Customer Liaison Committee; Benjamin Yue, Principal Advisor to CEM Executive Committee; Edmond Etchri, Director of CEM Generation Department; Chris Chao, Director of CEM Customer Services Department, Hellen Lok, Director of CEM Human Resources and Sustainability Department and Cecilia Nip, Director of CEM Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Communications Office.
A jury comprised of professionals made the final judgment on all categories of the contest. The judges include Maggie Lei, Officer of Consumer Rights and Interests Protection Department of Macau Consumer Council; João Ramos, President of Macau Energy Saving Association; Cheang Io Tung, Director of Macau Electromechanics Professionals Association; Andy Tam, Standing Director of Macau Association of Building Contractors and Developers and Tomas Leong, Deputy Director of Macau Association of Consumers of Public Utility Companies.
At the Award Ceremony, Benjamin Yue said that CEM has actively implemented the concept of "environment, society and governance" in its operations, and studied the application of new energy and smart grid management to support Macau's green and smart city development. CEM has formulated green development goals, which will be gradually promoted and implemented in three stages, with the goal of achieving carbon peak before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060. CEM has installed more than 2,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and 630 electric motorcycle charging stations in public car parks, actively supporting the Macau SAR government’s policy of promoting green transportation to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals. CEM has achieved fully coverage of smart meters by 2024, providing customers with more accurate electricity management information and electronic services, in line with the development of low-carbon green electricity services, and demonstrating CEM's practical actions in sync with the country's dual carbon goals. Yue said that in 2024, the number of tourists received by Macau increased to nearly 35 million. With the continuous growth in the number of tourists, many hotels still effectively practiced low-carbon management and successfully saved energy. This is an exciting achievement and fully demonstrates the industry’s social responsibility. It is expected that the number of tourists will further increase and electricity consumption will also rise. He believed that all hotels will actively respond and jointly promote Macau towards a green future.
Wang Xuezhi is BOMA China Energy Management Expert. With the topic of "ESG and AI Smart Energy Saving Practices", he shared corporate’s ESG development strategy trends, the sustainability work on dual carbon, ESG and digital energy efficiency management, actions and practices, as well as future strategies of a company that can achieve continued asset appreciation.
Dr. Paul S K Sat delivered a presentation on “Sharing of Hong Kong Energy Efficiency and Conservation Cases”, introducing the role of Retrofitting (RFit) and Retro-commissioning (RCx) in energy efficiency & Conservation (EE&C) and used case studies of energy saving in hotel and hostel sector from the HKGBC Retrofitting Guidebook to showcase the variety of retrofitting.
Last year, a total of 46 hotels and over 500 buildings took part in the contest. It calculated the four consecutive billing months of electricity consumption from July to October 2024 with the same period in 2023. “Residential Building Public Facilities Group Champion - Edf. Mei Kui Kuong Cheong Phase 1 Block 1” reduced electricity consumption up to 31.1% year on year during the contest period. “Hotel Group A Champion - Hotel Guia” and “Hotel Group B Champion - Riviera Hotel” reduced electricity consumption by over 9.6% and 7.3% respectively. Together with the participants of the “5% Energy Saving Action” Lucky Draw, all participating parties jointly saved a total of more than 9 million kWh of electricity during July to October in 2024. Over the past 16 years, a total of more than 390 million kWh of electricity was saved during the Activity and more than 240 million kilograms of carbon emissions* were reduced, equivalent to the planting of about 10 million trees^.
