Photovoltaic System (PV)

Introduction

The Macau SAR Government launched the “Regulation for Safety and Installation of Solar Energy PV Interconnections” (hereinafter referred to as the Regulation) on 26 January 2015, standardizing the installation of solar power photovoltaic (PV) generation systems and related equipment in public or private buildings, and formulating safety specifications for connecting solar power PV generation systems to public electric networks of both Low Voltage (LV) and Medium Voltage (MV) directly or through power distribution systems.

CEM has long supported the use of green energy in Macau and actively complies with the standards and requirements of the Regulations by connecting customers' PV generation facilities to CEM's power network. Bidirectional meters are installed to record the electricity imported to CEM's power network. CEM will buy the electricity generated by the PV system at a feed-in tariff rate.

As of March 2024, Macau has 9 solar PV systems connected to the network, with a total installed capacity of 3,223 kWp, producing over four million kWh of green energy. It is anticipated that larger photovoltaic systems will be developed in the future to inject more green energy into Macau.

What is solar PV energy?

Solar PV energy refers to an electricity generation technology that converts solar radiation into direct current energy using the PV effect of semiconductors.

The basic components of a solar power PV generation system are the solar panels, controller, and inverter.

When sunlight shines on the solar panels, electrons in the panels will generate directed movement, producing direct current and converting light energy into electrical energy, which is then converted into standard alternating current energy through the inverter.

What are the benefits of solar PV power generation?

Solar energy is a clean, safe, and renewable energy source. PV power generation does not produce pollutants during the process, so it does not harm the environment. It helps save energy, reduce emissions and achieve the "dual carbon" goals.

The main advantages include:

1. Reliable operation: It can provide power even in harsh environmental and weather conditions.
2. Long lifespan: The lifespan of crystalline silicon is typically over 25 years, and that of amorphous silicon is usually over 20 years.
3. Low maintenance costs: After construction, only a small number of workers are needed for regular inspections and maintenance of the system.
4. Natural energy source: Solar energy is an infinite and inexhaustible energy source that does not require energy costs.
5. No noise pollution: The entire system has no mechanical moving parts and does not produce noise.
6. Modularization: Choose the system capacity according to demand, easy installation, convenient and expansion is simple.
7. Safety: There are no flammable materials in the system, and the safety performance is high.
8. Autonomous power supply: Can operate off-grid and supply power independently, and not be affected by the public power grid.
